From 8th July to 12th July, Thierry Forveille, the editor-in-chief of Astronomy & Astrophysics, visited Yunnan Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, with the warm invitation from Prof. HAN Zhanwen. T. Forveille is also an astronomer at Observatoire de Grenoble, which is part of the University of Grenoble, in Southeastern France. His primary research interest is to understand how planets form around stars.
On 9th July, T. Forveille gave a talk entitled with "the work of a journal editor". He started by briefly reviewing the economic models which sustain academic journals, and then spend most time of his talk explaining what happens to your paper after it is submitted to a journal. The talk is targeted towards the younger colleagues who have not yet inferred much of this information through repeated exposure to the system, but will hopefully contain tidbits that are also of interest to more experienced colleagues.
He was greatly impressed by the visit to the Lijiang Observatory and Chengjiang Solar Observatory. In his responding letter, T. Forveille especially appreciated the presentation of the Solar Observatory and of its research highlights by Dr. XU Zhi, and he was impressed that Director BAI Jinming made time in his very busy schedule to show them the Lijiang Observatory and its 2.4m telescope. He appreciates Professor Zhanwen Han for arranging the visit and Dr. GE Hongwei for his accompany. He is also very grateful to the Yunnan Observatory for its outstanding hospitality.
He looks forward to future projects with Yunnan Observatories and in particular to the Writing School for Young Astronomers that he is planning to organize with Yunnan Observatories.
