The Astrometry & Application Group is the successor of the former Astrometry Laboratory of Yunnan Observatories, the succession having taken place in 2009. The group currently employs 8 personnel, and is headed by Yunnan Observatories Professor Jiancheng Wang.
The group focuses on the following fields of research: instrumentation for precision astrometry, methods of astrometry, geological errors, application of astrometric technologies, etc.
The group has developed a prototype of a multi-purpose astronomical theodolite, which is capable of measuring the latitude and longitude, as well as the local vertical deflection of its position. It has a huge potential for civilian applications.
Collaborating institutions include the Kunming University of Science and Technology, the Information Technology University of the People’s Liberation Army, and the Changzhou Bureau of Weights and Measures.
