Introduction to the Solar Physics Group
Solar Physics is traditionally one of YNAO’s strongest fields of research. The Solar Physics group employs many experts in this field, and has access to immense amounts of resources in terms of instrumentation. Our academic mission is divided into 4 parts: project-oriented solar research, routine observations, database services, and the development of new technologies and instrumentation.
As an important solar observation platform of the south (as in south of the Yangtze river), the group developed a 1m IR telescope named the New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST) as well as many of the instruments at the Fuxian Lake Solar Observatory. In terms of research, according to Springer Publishing, Chinese scientists accounted for 66 papers in the journal “Solar Physics” since 2005, 11% of the total, ranking 2nd alongside the UK. Our group contributed to this statistic, and contributions by our researchers have been noted by other prestigious international journals.
Planned future projects include the development of the next generation of optical and IR telescopes for solar observations, the construction of new sites in western China, as well as collaborations with Japanese colleagues for corona observations.
